“There are times when the human face and body can express the yearning of the heart so accurately that you can as they say, read them like a book. Do not abandon me.” - Diane Setterfield
Lets deconstruct the portrait and then weave it so that it equals more than the sum of its parts. I use classical realist techniques with a heaping scoop of whimsy. Drawing & Painting both from life (direct observation) as well as from photo reference. We will be using graphite, charcoal and oil paint.
Each week’s session building on the last.
Week 1: Understanding the structure of the human skull, proportions of features, and perspective. Drawing the portrait in graphite, charcoal and chalk on paper.
Week 2: Understanding how light falls over planes of the face, keying the shadows and highlights. Identifying the tonal relationships through underpainting and direct painting techniques.
Week 3: Focus on creating color harmony I flesh tones, painting from the shadow.
Week 4: Transitions, edges, bring it all together through final touches, re-keying high contrast areas, and punching up lights.
Bring your supplies (materials list emailed once you sign up).
I will also have kits for a fee. Paper and graphite pencils free at Darshan Studios : )
